LONDONDERRY – Shirley J. Hufnagel, 76, died May 28, 2012, at Bedford Hills Care & Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born Oct. 7, 1935, in London, the daughter of Albert and Doris (Sexton) Bartlett. She was raised in England and was educated in London schools, and it was there that she met her future husband, Richard, as he served with the U.S. Air Force.

Following their marriage in 1960, Shirley soon became a U.S. citizen. They lived in various states, among them Connecticut, Rhode Island, Florida, South Carolina and New Hampshire. Shirley loved being a homemaker and was often referred to as “Mrs. Clean.” She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining. The holidays were always something special in her home. She was an avid gardener, spending hours tending to her plants and flowers.

Shirley was a sports enthusiast, playing tennis and golf and had the opportunity to play at the Wimbledon Arena as a member of her high school tennis team. On Nov. 30, 2001, she scored a hole-in-one at the Spanish Wells Country Club in Bonita Springs, Fla.

Family members include her husband of 51 years, Richard E. Hufnagel Sr. of Londonderry; her son, Richard E. Hufnagel Jr. of Norfolk, Va.; her daughter, Deborah Ann Mercurio of Warwick, R.I.; two grandchildren, Nicole Mercurio of Warwick, R.I., and Corey Mercurio with the U.S. Air Force in England; and her sister, Joan Harvey of Canterbury, England; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service wasl held Saturday, June 2, at 11:30 a.m. at Londonderry United Methodist Church, 258 Mammoth Road, Londonderry. A private committal service is being held at a later date in Rhode Island.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Shirley’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association , 5 Bedford Farms, Suite 201, Bedford 03110. The McHugh Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences made be offered at mchughfuneralhome.com.
