RYE BEACH — Louise Tallman, 90, of Rye Beach, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at her home. She was born May 15, 1921, in New Haven, Conn., one of five children to the late Edgar L. and Nora K. (Livingston) Heermance.

Raised in Connecticut, she later graduated from Massachusetts State College, now the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, with a degree in landscape architecture. Louise married Charles V. Tallman in 1943, and she worked at government offices including the U.S. Coast Guard and Geodetic Survey and later the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In 1944, they moved to Candia, where she lived until Charlie’s job caused them to move to Gastonia, N.C., in 1959. They returned to Rye in 1963, where Louise served for 30 years on the Conservation Commission that included being involved with Odiorne State Park. She continued her involvement with Odiorne through the construction of the Seacoast Science Center.

She was also involved with local history, the Rye Historical Society cemetery restoration project, the Portsmouth Athenaeum and was a longtime member of the Rye Congregational Church.

Surviving family members include three sons, Peter Tallman of Longmont, Colo., Arthur Tallman of Portsmouth, and Stephen Tallman of Stratham; two daughters, Elizabeth Tallman of Greenland and Judith Tallman of Newburyport, Mass.; four grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Michael and Kathryn; a great-granddaughter, Rylee; and several nieces and nephews.

She shared 62 years of marriage with her husband, Charles, who died in 2006. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Alice Tallman.

SERVICES: Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye Center. Friends were respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either the Seacoast Science Center Tallman Fund, of the Rye Historical Society, c/o Elizabeth Tallman, P.O. Box 364, Rye Beach, NH 03871.
