Virginia “Ginnie” Holcombe (Horton), 86, of North Kingstown, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 28, 2014. She was the wife of the late Alvin E. “Whitey” Holcombe, Jr. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Maynard L. and Anna M. (Woodcock) Horton of Eleventh Street.
She graduated from the Business course at Hope High School ’45 and had been a member of the Fourth Baptist Church of Providence. She moved with her husband, during his Naval career, to Chincoteague, VA and Key West, FL, later returning to Rhode Island. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association, serving as Unit 42 secretary; and of the North Kingstown Senior Center where she received the Beechwood Volunteer of the Year Award, 2011.
Before raising her family, Mrs. Holcombe worked for the Boston Store, and then Starkweather and Shepley. She later volunteered at INSIGHT. She enjoyed duckpin bowling and was a longtime member of the Tuesday morning league at Wickford Lanes. In the ’90′s she traveled extensively with the NKSC and Arlene’s travel group. She leaves her daughter, Donna Holcombe; and two nephews, Andrew J. Cary, PhD and Forrest J. Cary, Jr. and his wife Laura and their four children, Samuel, Thomas, Amelia and Tayshia Cary of Wakefield. She was the sister of the late Maynard Horton, Jr. and Miriam E. (Horton) Cary.
An informal Celebration of Her Life will be held Saturday, April 5 from 2 to 6pm at the Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar, 7366 Post Road, North Kingstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the VFW, PO Box 8958, Topeka, KS 66608-9805 and the RI Shriners Annual Shrine Circus Day, PO Box 3697, Cranston, RI 02910-0697 will be appreciated.
