Bertha Burroughs was born on August 4, 1918, in Natick, Rhode Island to Adolph and Freida Philipp. She and her husband, Walter were married for 64 years and had one son, Philipp who lives in Redding, CT, with his wife, Marie. Bertha had 2 grandchildren, Kristen and Geoffrey and 3 great grandchildren, Luke, Harrison and Henry. Bertha’s loving family also included Matt Haines who is married to Kristen Burroughs and Adrienne McGill who is married to Geoffrey Burroughs.

During her career outside the home, Bertha wore many hats. She worked for her husband, the postmaster, as a postal clerk in the Allenton Post Office in Allenton, RI. She later worked at the University of Rhode Island as the administrative assistant to the Vice President. After retiring, Bertha co-founded Flowers by Bert and Peg which continues today on Tower Hill Road in North Kingstown.

Bertha ultimately retired from the business but always stayed active in creative endeavors. She was an extraordinary cook and loved to bestow her culinary treasures on family and friends.

Bertha was very active with the First Baptist Church of North Kingstown, RI, and served as its choir director and church clerk. She served on various boards in the church and was ultimately made a Life Deacon along with her husband, Walter.

Bertha moved to Meadow Ridge in Redding, CT, in 2005 and became a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Redding. Her vitality, loving nature, generous spirit and religious faith inspired all of those who knew her.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 11am in the First Baptist Church in North Kingstown, Tower Hill Road. Burial will be in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown. Visiting hours will be on Friday, April 4th from 5-7:00 p.m. in the FAGAN-QUINN Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown.
