Mary Elizabeth Cook Clark, 96, died peacefully on Friday, June 28, 2013, at Sakonnet Bay Manor surrounded by her three daughters.
She leaves behind Beth Cook Robillard of Wickford, Roberta Clark Chalmers of Cotuit, Mass., Barbara Clark Zeiser and her husband, Nicholas Zeiser, of Tiverton. Mary’s legacy also includes six grandchildren, Jessica Clark McGorty of Lynn, Mass., Amos Chalmers and Colin Chalmers of Phoenix Az., Mary Jane Robillard of Providence, Kristen Zeiser of Tiverton, Sarah Zeiser of Cambridge, Mass.; and two great-grandchildren, Bailey Chalmers and Aiden Chalmers of Phoenix. She was the widow of the late Lt. Col. Warren M. Clark. She was the long-time companion of Harold Loftes of Wakefield.
Mary graduated from North Kingstown High School, Class of 1936, attended nursing school, and graduated from Rhode Island College of Education, Class of 1943, before embarking on a life as a military wife. She taught wherever her husband was stationed, including the Paris American School in St. Cloud, France. During the last 20 years of her career, Mary taught in the North Kingstown Public Schools.
Mary loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a talented musician, singer, and artist. She enjoyed gourmet cooking, read voraciously, traveled extensively in her retirement, and had many beloved pets. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at St. Luke’s Church, 99 Peirce St. East Greenwich, on July 13, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Friends of the North Kingstown Free Library at 100 Boone St., North Kingstown, RI 02852 or to the Amicable Church Accessibility Fund, 3736 Main Rd., Tiverton, RI 02878. Interment will be private.
