Helen Haggerty Phillips, of Lewiston died Friday July 19, 2013 in Buffalo General Hospital.

Helen was born in New York City, NY, the daughter of the late William and Mary (Bohan) Haggerty.  She was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Manhattan, received her B.A. from Fordham University in NYC, her Master of Science in Education from Hunter College in NY, and her PhD (ABD) in education from the University of Buffalo. Helen loved to teach. She began career in education as an elementary school teacher in Chinatown, NYC, then in Nanuet, NY, and Pompton Plains, NJ. A resident of Lewiston since 1978, Helen was the Community Relations Officer at Niagara University, reporting directly to the President. Most recently she has served as the Conference & Events Manager for the Canadian/American Border Trade Alliance.

She was a world traveler as well as having visited all 50 states. An avid reader, she loved to learn new things. She also attended car shows with her husband and dear friends, including driving the Brickyard in Indianapolis. A devout Catholic, Helen was a communicant of St. Peter’s RC Church in Lewiston.

She is survived by her beloved husband, James D. Phillips, whom she married July 16, 1960; her loving children, Ann, Kathy, and Bill (Tammy) Phillips; and her beloved Irish cousins in New York City. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Haggerty.

Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Thursday from 4 – 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 26, at 10:00 am in St. Peter’s RC Church, 600 Center St., Lewiston, with the Rev. Michael Zuffoletto and Rev. Joseph Levesque concelebrating. (Please assemble at Church) Burial will be private in Rhode Island. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. #1 Ambulance Fund, 145 N. 6th St. P.O. Box 748, Lewiston, NY 14092
