Frances R. Dawley, RN, 96, died Monday, May 6, 2013 at the Scandinavian Home in Cranston. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard H. Dawley, Jr.

Born in Providence on April 26, 1917, the daughter of the late Harold and Frances (MacCallum) Miller, she graduated from Brown University in 1939 and from the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. She worked as a Nursing Instructor/Supervisor for the State of RI at the Medical Center in Cranston and volunteered at Kent Hospital several years after retiring.

She was a charter member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Warwick where she also started the Altar Guild.

Frances was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member and past matron of Pawtuxet Chapter No. 16, now affiliated with Signet Chapter No. 21, where she served as secretary for 18 years. She served the Rhode Island Grand Chapter as Grand Matron from 1989-1990 and was Grand Representative to the Grand Chapters of California and Vermont. She was the recipient of a Grand Cross of Color from the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.

She is survived by three sons: Stephen E. Dawley and his wife Sandra of Coventry, Christopher J. Dawley and his wife Christine of Warwick and James K. Dawleyand his wife Kimberly of Coventry; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one niece Karen Brienzi of East Greenwich and one nephew, Kenneth Miller of FL. She was predeceased by her son, Richard Bruce Dawley and her brother, Harold Miller, Jr.

Her family is remembering her as a beloved nursing instructor who, years later, was often remembered by her former students. She and her husband enjoyed boating and she loved tending to her flower garden.

Her funeral service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, on Thursday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM with an Eastern Star Memorial Service being conducted at 6:30. Burial will be in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown. The family requests memorial donations sent to the Eastern Star Foundation of RI, Education Fund, c/o Robert Kane, 95 Farnum Road, Warwick, RI 02888 or to the Scandinavian Home, 1811 Broad Street, Cranston, RI 02905.
