Eleanor "Missy" O'Leary

Saturday, June 9, 2012 @ 10:30am Graveside (Section 51 Lot 1 Grave 15)

Eleanor Peirce O’Leary, born September 6, 1920 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, died March 20, 2012 in Albuquerque after a life filled with love for family and friends.

Missy married her high school sweetheart Arthur Charles O’Leary in 1943, who served as a US Navy officer in the Pacific Theater in WWII. Her three children were born and raised on Navy postings including California, Florida, and New Mexico, where they lived in the 1960s. Missy returned to Rhode Island in 1970 after her divorce and worked as a secretary until she retired. In 2001 she returned to Albuquerque to live with her daughter Alison.

Her good cheer and loving nature continued even as dementia affected the last years of her life. She enjoyed being part of her children’s lives in New Mexico: her son Rob and daughter-in-law Beth O’Leary, her daughters Rae Kozai and Alison O’Leary, and Alison’s husband Daniel Rask. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Joseph Peirce of Wickford, RI. Neither Missy nor Arthur ever remarried, and they remained on cordial terms with a shared interest in their family until his death in 2007. She adored her grandchildren Tom, Travis, Meghann, Maureen, Quinn and Galen; great grandchildren Nicole, Alexandra, Random, Erryn and Mason; and great-great grandchildren Sarah, Hannah and Gabriel. Missy enjoyed a good party, and loved wearing the princess tiara at her birthday celebrations, also sneaking food to the family dogs Lola and Sage at the dinner table.

The O’Leary clan thanks Alliance Hospice and the Silva family for their excellent care. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 7 at French – University Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Watermelon Mountain Ranch, www.wmranch.org, 1512 Deborah Rd. SE #203 Rio Rancho, NM 87124, or no-kill shelter for homeless animals.

So very sorry to hear the news of the death of Eleanor. My mom, Mary Clark, used to regale us with the stories of the two childhood friends in Wickford and the love she felt for Eleanor’s parents. My mom was writing a letter to Eleanor in Eleanor’s last weeks. Friends forever. Rest in peace, Eleanor.
