SANFORD, MRS. MYRTLE ALICE age 103, of Jefferson, passed away Tuesday night, October 4, 2011 at Ashe Assisted Living & Memory Care Center. Celebration of life will be held Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church with visitation at 1:00pm in the fellowship hall.
Mrs. Sanford, the youngest of five children, was born in New Haven, CT on January 25, 1908 to Alice Bell Clarke Homan and Gilbert Laws Homan. Her father passed away when Myrtle was five years old, so the family moved to Providence, RI. After graduation from high school, she married Samuel Clinton Sanford. Upon retirement, in 1964, from the state of Rhode Island as a principal clerk, she cared for her sister, Ethel until her death in 1976. She then joined Naomi Rebekah Lodge and served in many capacities, ultimately serving as president of the state Rebekah Assembly. She moved to Jefferson, NC in 1997 at the age of 89.
She was predeceased by her sister, Ethel M. Homan, her three brothers, Luther C. Homan, Wesley D. Homan and Clifford L. Homan and two sons, Earl C. Sanford and Kenneth A. Sanford, Sr.
Mrs. Sanford is survived by a daughter, Judy Leggett (Chester), of Jefferson, NC; a son, W. Richard Sanford, Sr. (Rose) of Cranston, RI; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 18 great great grandchildren.
