Barbara J. (Perkins) Berke, a resident of Warwick and Sunapee, N.H., passed away March 18 in Chestnut Hill, Mass., after a happy and purposeful life. She was the wife of the late A. Norman Berke. They were married for 59 years.
Born and raised in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Howard D. and Lillian E. Perkins. She graduated from Classical High School in 1943, the school’s centennial. She was a secretary at Edwards & Angell in Providence, and for more than 20 years was the Providence office manager for the late U.S. Sen. John H. Chafee.
As a young woman, she was involved in Camp Fire Girls and she loved to play her piano. She was an active member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Providence. She was proud to have recently become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member, along with her late husband, of the Sons of Norway. She found peace and serenity in their beloved vacation home on the water in Sunapee.
She is survived by two loving and grateful sons, Craig N. Berke and his wife, Jennifer, of Richmond, and Bruce A. Berke and his wife, Nancy, of Bow, N.H.; five adored grandchildren, Lauren, Andrew, Elizabeth, Edward and Hunter; two nephews, and two nieces. She was the loving sister of the late Edwin H. Perkins.
