Monday, April 22, 2013 following 10am funeral in the Butterfield Chapel (Section 41 Lot 1 Grave 1B)

LONG, CHARLES H. passed on April 19, 2013 in comfort. He was the husband of Irma R. Brown Long for 38 years and of the late Shirley Long. He was born on March 28, 1915 to Edward A. and Hilda N. Long.

Charles is survived by his daughters Carol J. Bush (George) and Judith A. Richard (Glenn), grandchildren Brian C. Richard and Kristen M. Richard, great-grandchildren Bethany L. Rodrigues (Steven), Nathan Richard and Joshua Richard. He is also survived by stepchildren Stephen R. Brown (Marianne), David R. Brown, Christina M. Brown MacGillivray, Peter S. Brown (Janie), Jon A. Brown (Sally), grandchildren Stephen J. Brown (Lorelle), Sean T. Brown, Sarah E. Brown, Ryan J. Brown, Jonathan M. Brown (Kelly), Christian R. Brown, and great grandchildren Stephen C. Brown and Austin J. Brown.

Charlie worked for Brown & Sharpe for a number of years and owned and operated Precision Machine Tool Repair Company for 47 years with his partner, Alfred Lawson. Charlie served in the Merchant Marine in World War II as a ship engineer in the North Sea, Mediterranean and Adriatic. Charlie conducted his life and business as a Christian. He was a member of Peoples Baptist Church for 25 years and has been a supporter of Oaklawn Community Baptist Church for the past 38 years. Charlie’s interests were his family, business, and competitive sports. He pole vaulted in high school, played the drums and other instruments, loved baseball, golf, sailing, dancing and crossword puzzles. Charlie’s great optimism and will to win was a blessing to all who knew him. He said being a Providence Journal paper boy for five years taught him to be responsible every day in every kind of weather to be there and get his job done.

Funeral will be held Monday, at 10:00 AM in the Butterfield Chapel with burial at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingston, Rhode Island. Visiting hours will be Sunday April 21st from 4:00 PM 7:00 PM in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston.
