Mennillo, Ernest P. MD, February 26, 1923 – January 22, 2013. Father time caught up with Dr. Ernie on Tuesday morning at Brentwood Nursing Home. Born in upstate New York, Dr. Mennillo was the middle son of Domenic and Ann (Nacca) Mennillo. Older brother Carl of Schenectady, NY passed many years ago, and Daniel of Boca Raton, FL passed away last year.

Dr. Mennillo is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Joanne (Macomber) Mennillo.  He leaves four sons: Ernest P. (Paul) Mennillo Jr of Warwick, Dr. Roger Mennillo of Barrington, Dana Mennillo of Warwick, Todd Mennillo of Newport, a daughter Melissa Day of Cranston, as well as eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Dr. Mennillo was a WWII veteran having piloted a B-17 with the 490th bomb group of the 8th Air Force, US Army Air Corps in England. Upon returning from the war Dr. Mennillo earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester and came to Rhode Island to do his pediatric residency at Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Ernie practiced pediatrics in Cranston for over fifty years including many years as the pediatrician for the Cranston school system, and later served as chief of pediatrics at Kent County Memorial Hospital where he had also served thirteen years in the E.R. Dr.

Mennillo was an avid trapshooter and in 1982 won the National Championship Handicap event at the Grand American Trapshoot in Vandalia, Ohio. Though an admitted “duffer” he also enjoyed golf in his later years. But mostly he enjoyed his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, patients, and of course dogs.

His funeral will be held on Friday January 25th at 10:00am in Phillips Memorial Baptist Church 565 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. Burial will follow in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00-8:00pm in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in his memory be made to The Kent Hospital Foundation: Nursery Fund 455 Tollgate Road Warwick, RI 02886.
