LaFontaine, Philip W. “Phil”, 84, a retired Warwick firefighter died February 1, 2012 at Kent Hospital. He was the husband of the late Virginia “Ginny” (Martin) LaFontaine and a son of the late Edmore and Mary A. (Havey) LaFontaine.
Phil worked as a junior volunteer firefighter at age 7 at the old Oakland Beach Avenue fire barn. He then volunteered until joining the Warwick fire department in 1959 working the greater part of his career at station 3 and retired in 1982. He was a life member of the Oakland Beach Fire Co. and a communicant of St. Rita Church, Warwick and St. Patrick Church in Largo, FL. He wintered in Indian Rocks, Largo, FL for 25 years and was an avid golfer at Seaview Country Club, Warwick and Largo, FL Municipal Golf Course.
Mr. LaFontaine is survived by two daughters, Janet Rawcliffe and her husband, Frank; Cheryl Rebello and her husband, Jim; grandchildren, Michelle Rawcliffe, Mandy Arnold, Tiffany Carter and James Rebello, III; one great grandson, Ryan Arnold; one sister, Claire Spatcher; two sisters-in-law, Claire and Pat LaFontaine. He was the brother of the late Edna Spelman, Doris Payne, Edward, John, Ernest and William LaFontaine.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 9 am from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave.with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rita Church, Oakland Beach Ave. at 10 am. Burial will be in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 pm.
